Professional Teeth Cleaning
A Preventive Measure for Your Oral Health
What is Professional Teeth Cleaning?
Professional teeth cleaning is a hygiene procedure performed by a dental professional. It involves a thorough cleaning of teeth surfaces, adjacent tissues, and gums and removing plaque and tartar in areas not accessible to toothbrushing or flossing.
Dental cleaning is a preventive measure, and dentists consider it a critical part of oral hygiene. It promotes oral health, strengthens teeth and gums, and ensures that dental implants and dentures last longer.
What happens during a Professional Dental Cleaning?
1. Initial Oral Examination
First, the dental professional examines the oral cavity to assess the condition of the teeth and gums and whether good at-home oral hygiene practices are followed. Additional tests may then be performed to determine any cavities or periodontal problems.
2. Professional Advice on Oral Hygiene Practices at Home
Based on the initial examination results, we will guide you with oral care and hygiene tips at home. It includes the use of toothbrushes, dental floss, and interdental brushes. We will also explain what diet you can follow for healthier teeth.
3. Plaque and Tartar Removal
In this step, with the help of ultrasonic or laser devices, we gently remove plaque, tartar, and discoloration from all dental surfaces.
These can be caused by poor oral hygiene practices or unhealthy eating and living habits, such as:
- Poor tooth brushing and flossing techniques.
- Diet rich in sugar
- Smoking (nicotine)
- High consumption of tea, coffee, or red wine.
During this step, we pay special attention to bacteria or tartar accumulated in hard-to-reach areas, for example, in the interdental spaces and on the edges of fillings or dentures.
4. Tooth Polishing
To prevent bacteria and plaque from resettling on tooth surfaces, we gently smooth and polish them with a special paste and brush, avoiding damaging tooth enamel. In addition, tooth polishing removes surface stains, giving the finishing touch to your professional teeth cleaning.
5. Tooth Decay Prevention and Enamel Protection
For tooth decay protection and enamel strengthening (remineralization), we apply a fluoride-containing compound or calcium phosphate cream as a final step.
